General practice is 24/7 and general practice out-of-hours (GP OOH) services in Scotland provide cover for patients over 70% of the week (118 hours) when GP Surgeries are closed. They also provide cover when GP practices are closed for extended periods across bank holidays.
Across Scotland GP OOH deal with around a million patient contacts per year. When people need urgent care outwith core service hours, generalist primary care professionals provide timely support and advice that connects people to the services they need.
The main users of GP OOH services are children, older people and people with long-term conditions, palliative care needs or mental health problems.
The GP OOH services offer both salaried and sessional work which deals with urgent primary care problems.
The work is fun, varied and very rewarding, and there are opportunities across Scotland. If you are interested in working for one of our GP OOHs services please get in contact with the OOH contact for the region you are interested in.
