About Annan and the local area
Nestled on the banks of the River Annan, this historic market offers a unique blend of coastal beauty, deep history, and an active lifestyle—making it an exceptional place to call home. Known as the “Queen of the Border,” the town prides itself on its welcoming community, bustling independent shops, and strong cultural identity.
The town’s heritage shines through annual traditions such as the Riding of the Marches, a historic celebration reaffirming Annan’s Royal Burgh boundaries—a tradition dating back centuries.
With its position at the mouth of the River Annan on the Solway Firth, there is direct access to the sea, making it ideal for coastal walks, wildlife watching, and sailing. The recently revitalised Annan Harbour now welcomes pleasure craft thanks to community driven dredging work, offering improved access for yachts and trailer sailors two hours either side of high water.
The town continues to invest in its future through ongoing harbour regeneration, enhancing its riverside appeal and unlocking new opportunities for leisure, tourism, and community life.
With its coastal setting, strong transport links, rich traditions, and access to outdoor adventure, Annan is an inspiring place to live and work—where community, culture and landscape come together beautifully.
There is easy access to beautiful scenery, National Parks and a wide range of outdoor pursuits throughout Dumfries and Galloway and the Lake District.
